VASAI: The Vasai court on Tuesday sentenced a man accused of double murder to rigorous life imprisonment and directed him to pay a fine of Rs 10,000.
The accused, Kiran Kantilal Makwana, 47, murdered a woman with whom he was in a relationship, along with her son, during the early hours of 27 October 2015, between 1 am and 2 am.
After the incident, Makwana attempted suicide by slashing his wrist. Unable to convey the address to the Tulinj police over the phone, he went directly to the Tulinj police station and surrendered. Officers then proceeded to the crime scene, sent the two bodies for post-mortem examination, and booked him for murder.
In his statement, Makwana said he lived at his Evershine City flat in Vasai East with Sonali Prakash Chemburkar (also known as Sonali Rajkumar Chavan), 32, her husband Rajkumar Chavan, 35, and their 12-year-old son. Makwana’s own son and daughter also lived with them for a time.
He stated that Sonali never treated his children with respect, which led him to send them to their mother’s place. The topic often caused arguments.
On the night of 26 October, during one such quarrel, Makwana said he hit Sonali with a hammer and then stabbed her multiple times with a kitchen knife. Her son, upon hearing her screams, tried to intervene and was also stabbed. After the assault, Makwana slashed his left wrist and informed the Tulinj police.
Kiran Kabadi, the then police inspector of Tulinj police station and the investigating officer in the case, said:
“This was a tricky case as there were no eye witnesses and we had to rely on what the accused told us and then we had to confirm the same. It is always good when cases are concluded and the accused are punished,” he added.
