In a bid to boost tourism, Thailand is all set to permit limited sales of alcohol on Buddhist holidays. This will mark a significant change in Thailand’s efforts to attract more international tourists. With this plan, the Thai government plans to accommodate visitors who often find themselves disappointed when bars are closed on these religious holidays.
As per Deputy Prime Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong, the sale of alcoholic beverages will be permitted in designated regions. As per reports, the new changes will come into effect before May 11, which marks an important Buddhist holiday in Thailand.
Thailand is noted for its pretty beaches, vibrant nightlife, and unique status as the only country in Asia to have decriminalised cannabis. However, despite the country's appeal, many tourists have been caught off guard by the closure of bars on religious holidays. These closures are part of the country's cultural and religious practices. But tourists were not happy with this.
So the government decided to change the plan under the new proposal wherein alcohol will be sold in specific zones, such as hotels, venues hosting major events, and areas officially classified as service or tourism zones. While not all establishments will be able to sell alcohol, the changes are designed to ensure that tourists are able to enjoy their vacation without facing restrictions on alcohol availability during important religious dates.
The plan is currently undergoing a 15-day public hearing process. Thailand's economy has been struggling to keep pace with its neighbors, and the government has been ramping up its efforts to revitalize the tourism sector. Thailand has also legalised same-sex marriage, another move aimed at attracting a broader demographic of tourists.
Not only this, the country has been keen to capitalize on its growing visibility in popular culture, particularly following its prominent feature in season three of the hit series The White Lotus. By permitting alcohol sales on Buddhist holidays, Thailand hopes to further add to its appeal, offering a more relaxed and welcoming atmosphere while respecting its cultural and religious values.
