The Pittsburgh Steelers are still awaiting a final decision from veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, and while the uncertainty lingers, optimism continues to grow within the organization. Team president and owner Art Rooney II recently addressed the situation at the NFL’s annual league meetings, shedding light on where things stand with the four-time MVP.
Steelers’ pursuit of Aaron Rodgers gains momentum as Art Rooney II sees encouraging signs
With the departures of Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, the Steelers have been actively seeking a starting quarterback, and all signs seem to point toward Rodgers. While speaking with a small group of reporters, Rooney offered a promising update about the situation, particularly in response to Aaron Rodgers recently working out with newly acquired wide receiver DK Metcalf.
“I would say it was a good sign that he (Rodgers) wanted to do that,” Rooney said. “We keep hearing that [Rodgers is] headed in our direction. All signs are positive so far.”
For Pittsburgh, Rodgers’ presence at the Steelers’ facility on March 21 was another encouraging development. General Manager Omar Khan and head coach Mike Tomlin both described the meeting as productive, and Rooney echoed those sentiments.
“It was good to meet him,” Rooney said. “We talked about Pittsburgh and all the Pittsburgh coaches he’s had over the years. We talked about Greenfield and how much he knows about Greenfield. So we had a good conversation.”
However, despite the positive indicators, the wait continues. The Steelers initially hoped to secure their quarterback before the start of free agency, but the process has stretched longer than anticipated.
“No, (I) didn’t envision it taking this long,” Rooney admitted. “No.”
Pittsburgh finds itself in an unusual position. Unlike past quarterback hunts, they are not competing against other teams for Rodgers’ services. Instead, the primary challenge is the possibility of the 41-year-old quarterback deciding to retire rather than commit to another NFL season.
Rooney acknowledged that while patience is being exercised, there is a limit to how long the team is willing to wait.
“Not forever, but a little while longer,” Rooney said when asked about the timeline.
Tomlin reinforced that sentiment, stating that the team has not imposed a deadline on Rodgers but hopes for clarity soon.
“We’ll see what happens,” Rooney added. “Hopefully, we’ll know something soon.”
The Rodgers factor and Steelers’ future
The sight of Rodgers working out with Metcalf at UCLA has only fueled speculation. The former Seahawks wide receiver is set to be a major weapon for the Steelers, and his on-field chemistry with Rodgers could be an exciting prospect for the franchise. The fact that Rodgers participated in those throwing sessions suggests that he is at least considering Pittsburgh as his next destination.
