The bus driver, who was also injured, is currently hospitalised and faces charges of reckless driving.
The incident took place on Wednesday morning at Indira Circle when the bus driver reportedly failed to stop at a traffic signal. The vehicle struck several two-wheelers before coming to a halt.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone-2), Jagdish Bangarwa, said, “Four people are dead in this accident — two men and two women. Two other women and one man are injured. We have registered an offence at Gandhigram police station. The bus has been seized, and we have requested the RTO to conduct a mechanical inspection. We have also taken the driver’s blood sample to determine if he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”
The DCP added, “As per the preliminary report, the driver was unable to apply the brakes at the traffic signal. We are investigating the cause.”
The authorities have launched a comprehensive investigation, including mechanical inspection of the vehicle and toxicology tests of the driver. The Regional Transport Office (RTO) is carrying out a detailed examination of the bus.
The deceased have been identified as Raju Gida, Sangita Nepali, Kiran Kakkad, and Chinmay Bhatt. The injured are Suraj Raval, Vishal Makwana, and Virajba Khachar.
An angry mob reportedly thrashed the bus driver, Shishupalsinh Rana, leaving him injured. He was later shifted to a hospital. The crowd also vandalised the bus.
Paresh Adhiya, General Manager of Rajkot Rajpath Limited — which operates the city bus and BRTS services in Rajkot — said, “According to the conductor’s statement, there was a brake failure, and the driver was unable to control the bus. The vehicle has been seized by the police. We are awaiting the RTO’s report."
