The ice age ended about 11,700 years ago, when the conditions on the Earth were extremely harsh and difficult, yet it had beings that lived during that period and also survived past the age, due to their exceptional survival instincts and adaptations. Here are 10 such animals

Neanderthals

Neanderthals were homo sapiens, early humans with different features. Their physical features included short limbs, wide chests and large noses which helped them to stay warm in cold temperatures.

Wolly mammoth

They were elephant-like creatures, very big in size, having thick coats of hair, thick fatty layers of skin and long, curved tusks which helped them insulate their bodies. The coats, meat and bones from their body were the source of heat for the homo sapiens.

Giant ground sloth

They were creatures having large claws that could walk on their hind legs. It was in fact the largest bipedal mammal of all time. In addition to their physical features, their slow metabolism also helped them to keep their bodies warm and maintain body temperature.

Cave Bear

As their name suggests, they used to live more in caves than other kinds of bears. They used to have a herbivorous-omnivorous diet which included eating varieties of plants and some animals. Caves provided them protection from the cold and predators.

Dire Wolf

They were huge, prehistoric predators. Heavier and more robust than the present grey wolves, they had strong jaws and large teeth. They mostly hunted large herbivores. Dire wolves had thick fur to survive cold climates.
